The top 5 road trip apps for 2016

Posted on 7/26/2016 by Nicholas Jones

Road trip season is here! Returning to the road trip theme from our July 5th post, here is our list of the top 5 apps for your next road trip!

  1. Waze
  2. Gas Guru
  3. Roadtrippers
  4. Dark Sky
  5. Findery

1. Waze
No surprise here since we mentioned Waze by name in our previous post on must-have road trip tech. Waze is a navigation app that is constantly updated by wazers (as users of the app are known) to provide you the best routes available. It alerts you to traffic jams, accidents, speed traps, and more, and will route you around them if possible. If you see an accident or other event that impacts traffic you can easily drop it onto the map for upload to help out other wazers. Free for Android and iOS.

2. Gas Guru
Gas Guru is an easy-to-use app that finds the lowest gas price whether you’re tooling around town or cruising down the freeway. On launch it displays a map of all nearby gas stations and their prices, with lowest priced station highlighted in green.

You can toggle from the default view to a list of nearby stations ranked by price. Tapping on any result will give you driving directions to that station, prices for all grades of gas and their contact info.

You can filter by fuel grade and search almost any city or town so you’ll know where to save on gas when you arrive at your next stop. Free for Android and iOS.

3. Roadtrippers
Roadtrippers is a trip planning app that helps you find awesome attractions, food and much more along the way. Pick your start and end points and the app plots a map of your route. You can add points of interest along the route – practical stuff like accommodations, food, and campgrounds or more offbeat attractions like quirky shops, wineries and breweries, and even ghost towns.

Swiping up on a point of interest brings up user photos, reviews, contact information, a star rating, hours of operation and price. Free for Android and iOS.

4. Dark Sky
Dark Sky is a hyperlocal weather app will help you avoid weather surprises and let you plan your day’s activities accordingly. The app uses your GPS location to provide precise weather info down to the minute and forecasts weather conditions you can expect in the next hour, day or week.

The clean interface quickly and clearly displays you all the weather info you need. Cycle through the chance of precipitation, temperature, wind, humidity and UV index. Swipe right and the coming week’s forecast displays. Swipe to the left and you see an animated world view of storms.

You can also search almost any location to scout the weather before you get there. $3.99 for Android and iOS.

5. Findery
This app is crowd-sourced, local guide to wherever you are. Find the best doughnuts in town or learn where to catch some live reggae or bluegrass. You can search your current location, or anywhere to plan an upcoming trip.

Swipe down on a location to add it to a bucket list. Later when you’ve visited, mark that you’ve been there and leave your thoughts on the place. And you can upload your own road trip discoveries for others to enjoy.

Tap on a location to read more about it, peruse others’ stories and recollections of the place, check out photos, see maps and find more information. Findery is constantly expanding as people upload their thoughts and memories of places all over the world. Free for Android and iOS.

So those are our picks for the top 5 apps for your next road trip. But none of them are going to help you at all if you don’t have cell service. Your road trip may take you to places where you can’t get a reliable mobile signal. That’s where a cell signal booster can be a lifesaver, as I mentioned in our previous post 5 Road Trip Tech Essentials. Click the button below to learn how you can stay connected wherever the road takes you.
