"Wireless Wednesday"–Fall Smartphone Blitz

weBoost | July 10, 2013

This week for “Wireless Wednesday” we’re taking a look ahead into fall with @FierceWireless Phil Goldstein’s article on smartphones. Take a look below–

The fall is often a time when OEMs announce new devices and strategies aimed at capturing consumers’ attention–and wallets–ahead of the holiday shopping season. This presents both an opportunity and a challenge for device makers: On the one hand, they can get out in front of consumers ahead of the big end-of-year rush for gifts. On the other hand, they often need to produce their own launch event and generate enough buzz with the media and among consumers to drive sales. It’s a tough balancing act, but one that is becoming increasingly necessary as top-flight OEMs jostle for attention in an increasingly crowded market.

It’s become easier to predict the next big device launch from major handset makers, as blogs devoted to specific companies have proliferated, along with leaked images, videos and snippets of information of various kinds. To a certain extent, the mystery is gone from device launches, which are often dissected by the tech press before they are even made official.

However, some mystery still remains, if not about a device’s specs then around what it will mean for the company producing it. That, arguably, is more important that a gadget’s processor speed or screen resolution.

With that in mind, FierceWireless has decided to peer into the future to divine which device launches will make the biggest splash this fall. Some of these devices could be announced over the summer but might not be released to consumers until the fall. Additionally, this list is by no means comprehensive, but gives a representative cross sampling of the kinds of high-profile launches that will hit the market.

The list that @FierceWireless came up with as the most anticipated smartphones this fall are:

iPhone 5S BlackBerry A10 Jolla (Sailfish OS) Motorola Moto X Nokia EOS/Lumina 1020 Samsung Galaxy Note III

Which devices from this list are you most excited for? Are there any others not on this list that you think should be? Let us know in the comments section below, or on Facebook/Twitter.
